Key takeaways

  • Moving out of state may affect your Medicare coverage.
  • Original Medicare benefits stay the same across states, but Medicare Advantage, Part D and Medigap need a closer look.
  • Update your address with Social Security and tell your insurance plan about your move.

If you’re planning to move to Texas, you may be concerned about your Medicare coverage. Can you enroll in a different plan, even outside the traditional Medicare enrollment period? Read on for answers about what happens to Medicare when you move and how your new address affects your options.

Original Medicare

If you’re enrolled in Original Medicare, which includes Medicare Part A and Part B, your benefits won’t change simply because you move to another state. Part A helps cover inpatient hospital stays, eligible skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health care. Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies and preventive services.

You can use Original Medicare with providers anywhere in the U.S. who accept Medicare. Before your move, look for doctors and hospitals near your new Texas home and ask whether they accept new Medicare patients.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D prescription drug plans serve defined geographic areas. A move to another state may put you outside your current plan’s service area, but it does not automatically mean every person must change plans. Tell your insurer your new address and ask whether your current coverage can continue.

If you need a new plan, compare coverage for your medications, pharmacy access and costs at your new ZIP code. A move outside your plan’s service area can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period.

When can you switch after a move?

If you tell your plan before you move, your opportunity to switch begins the month before your moving month and continues for two full months afterward. Otherwise, Medicare.gov describes the window as beginning when you move and continuing for two full months after your move. Confirm your exact deadline with your plan or Medicare.

Check Medicare’s moving-related enrollment rules.

Medicare Advantage

What happens to Medicare Advantage when moving to another state? These plans have geographic service areas and usually use provider networks. Check whether your new address is within your plan’s service area and whether the doctors, hospitals and pharmacies you want to use participate.

If you move outside the service area, you can use a Special Enrollment Period to choose a new Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare. Even if you stay within the service area, new plan options at your new address may give you an opportunity to change coverage.

If you return to Original Medicare, review prescription drug coverage separately. The opportunity to change Medicare Advantage coverage does not make every Medigap policy available without health questions; any guaranteed issue rights depend on your circumstances.

A Medicare Moss expert can help you compare the Texas Medicare plans available at your new address. Start the conversation as soon as you know where you’re moving so there is time to confirm coverage and enrollment dates.

Medicare Supplement plans in Texas

Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, helps pay certain out-of-pocket costs under Original Medicare. You can generally keep an existing Medigap policy when you move as long as you still have Original Medicare. Tell your insurer about your new address and ask whether your premium will change.

Medicare SELECT policies are an important exception because they use a network. If you move outside a SELECT policy’s service area, ask your insurer about your replacement options and deadlines.

If you want to switch to a different Medigap policy, acceptance may depend on health questions unless you have a guaranteed issue right or another applicable protection. Confirm your options before canceling existing coverage. Medicare explains the rules for changing Medigap policies, and the Texas Department of Insurance provides a Texas supplement guide.

Your Medicare checklist for moving to Texas

Use these steps to prepare before your moving date:

  1. Update your address with Social Security. This updates your official Medicare address, even if you don’t receive Social Security benefits. Visit Medicare’s change-of-address guidance or call Social Security at 800-772-1213.
  2. Find providers near your new home. With Original Medicare, confirm that providers accept Medicare and new patients. With Medicare Advantage, also check your plan’s network.
  3. Contact your Medigap insurer. Ask about premium changes and any Medicare SELECT service-area restrictions.
  4. Notify your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. Confirm whether you need new coverage, your enrollment deadline and the effective date of any replacement plan.
  5. Review prescriptions and pharmacies. Compare coverage for your medications and identify nearby network pharmacies. Ask about refills before your move if needed.

Moving overseas or traveling

What happens if I move overseas?

Original Medicare generally does not cover care outside the United States, with only limited exceptions. Before deciding whether to keep Part A and Part B while abroad, discuss premiums and future enrollment consequences with Social Security or Medicare.

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans require residence in their service areas. Notify your plan if you move abroad. Some Medigap policies include limited foreign travel emergency benefits, but those benefits are not a substitute for ongoing health coverage while living overseas.

Does Medicare cover emergency care when traveling?

Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage cover eligible emergency care within the United States. For foreign travel, Original Medicare coverage is very limited. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer additional travel benefits, and some Medigap policies cover certain foreign travel emergencies, subject to policy limits. Check your own coverage before leaving. Review Medicare’s coverage outside the U.S.
